And so, I check out the pollen index for our area and wowzer and a half! The index only goes up to a maximum of 12 for heaven's sake. Pollen count is typically the highest between 10 AM and 4 PM - that kinda shoots the day if you enjoy the mild fall weather.
You can not get away from these allergy producing pollens - they can fly hundreds of miles on the wind. Clean up your yard and roadsides and you'll still be sneezing at pollen from another part of the state. It's a native plant in all of the US except Alaska - plus it's in many parts of Canada.
The reaction to pollen this time of the year is traditionally called "hay fever" because it comes at a time when farmers bale hay. Hay doesn't cause the pollen associated with the fall allergies.
Ragweed plants spread by seed so it's best to pull them early in the growing season. They have a shallow root system and pull easily. It's recommended you wear gloves as some people can develop a rash (another allergy) from touching the leaves.
Folks used to blame Goldenrod for their hay fever and we now know it's the rather unattractive Ragweed. As I drove down our road today, the portion where the farmer doesn't mow the roadsides was thick with the stuff.
According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America www.aafa.org , 10-20% of us suffer with ragweed allergy. Check out the site for additional info. There is no cure (sad face) but there are things you can take to help with the symptoms (happy face). Yes, a true geek does not use the little yellow emotion face inserts - they spell it out. I wonder if they have an emotion face sneezing?
